[News] [Feedback] [FAQ]

Patrick O'Brian is definitely one of my favourite authors of all time!
Once I started to read my first one, I had to read them all. It's taken me two years so far, and I'm up to "The Hundred Days" so far, and I've got "Blue at The Mizzen".

Sail Away with Captain Aubrey This is the first book in the Aubrey-Maturin series. Here we meet Lieutenant Jack Aubrey, soon to take as his first command as Master, the Sophie a Brig. Along with him comes Steven Maturin, ship's surgeon and spy.

Read about their exploits as they cruise along the Mediterranean searching for enemies of England.

"Meticulously researched. Accurate in every way. Better than Hornblower"
~ RobsBooks ~

A great book! This is the Nineteenth novel in the series, and said to be the penultimate one!

For Jack Aubrey, the Hundred Days bought an eleventh-hour rescue of a lifetime's service in the Royal Navy that, for all it's brilliance and excitement, seemed to be ending in inconspicuous respectability. He is already on his way across the Atlantic to try his fortunes under the flag of the young Chilean republic when Napoleon escapes from Elba...

"If you're a fan of Patrick O'Brian you'll love this book, and if you haven't read any of his, you're in for a treat!"

Books in order by Patrick O'Brian in the Aubrey-Maturin Series:

Master and Commander.
This book begins the adventure, and sets the scene for the rest of the series.

Post Captain.
This story begins with Jack Aubrey arriving home from the Mediterranean to find England at peace following the Treaty of Amiens. He and his friend Stephen Maturin, surgeon and secret agent, begin to live the lives of country gentlemen. Their comfortable existence, however, is cut short when Jack is overnight reduced to a pauper with enough debts to keep him in prison for life. He flees to the continent to seek refuge: instead he finds himself a fugitive as Napoleon has ordered the internment of all Englishmen in France. Aubrey's adventures in escaping from both France and the debtor's prison will grip the reader as fast as his unequalled actions at sea.

HMS Surprise.
H.M.S Surprise
follows the variable fortunes of Captain Jack Aubrey's career in Nelson's navy as he attempts to hold his ground against admirals, colleagues and the enemy, accepting a commission to convey a British ambassador to the East Indies. The voyage takes him and his friend Stephen Maturin to the strange sights and smells of the Indian subcontinent, and through the archipelago of spice islands where the French have a near-overwhelming local superiority.

The Mauritius Command.
Based on the actual campaign of 1810 in the Indian Ocean, O'Brian's attention to the detail of eighteenth century life ashore and at sea is meticulous. This tale is as beautifully written and as gripping as any in the series; it also stands on it's own as a superlative work of fiction.

Desolation Island.

The Fortune of War.

The Surgeon's Mate.

The Ionian Mission.

Treason's Harbour.

The Far Side of the World.

The Reverse of the Medal.

The Letter of Marque.

The Thirteen-Gun Salute.

The Nutmeg of Consolation.

Clarissa Oakes.

The Wine-Dark Sea.

The Commodore.

The Yellow Admiral.

The Hundred Days.
Now available in paperback.

Blue at the Mizzen.
This is the latest Aubrey-Maturin novel.
The title of this book suggests that Jack Aubrey will at last achieve the longed for rank of a Blue Admiral. At the outset of this story he is neither financially embarrassed or under a professional cloud.
In this book his ship the Surprise is bound for Chile, to ignite revolutionary politics there. This is bound to be a good read.
